A brief excerpt from something I am currently working on:
“Describing happiness in terms of modern psychology suggests that happiness is purely a matter of neurology. Despite the fact that the term psychology is derived from the Greek word for soul, ψυχή, most of modern psychology has rejected the existence of the immaterial soul as part of the makeup of human beings in favor of a purely material conception of human existence. If such is true, and if happiness is like depression or anxiety, a purely neurological experience, then, just as calm can be wrought by medication, so can happiness. But this would be accepting a definition of happiness that allows for the idea of being happy immediately after you’ve lost your whole family in a house fire as long as you managed to grab the pill bottle off your nightstand as you scrambled out the window.”

I have exciting news to share: You can now read Jacob’s Newsletter in the new Substack app for iPhone.
With the app, you’ll have a dedicated Inbox for my Substack and any others you subscribe to. New posts will never get lost in your email filters, or stuck in spam. Longer posts will never cut-off by your email app. Comments and rich media will all work seamlessly. Overall, it’s a big upgrade to the reading experience.
The Substack app is currently available for iOS. If you don’t have an Apple device, you can join the Android waitlist here.
This is a great format! Looking forward to going forward!
Your post brings to mind a book I read some years ago: The Saints' Guide to Happiness
by Robert Ellsberg.
