Kickstarter: The Dragon and The Raven

The Campaign is Now Live!

I mentioned recently in an update that

M.A. Franklin

had asked me to join him in helping to create a new edition of G. A. Henty’s wonderful book, The Dragon and The Raven. As many of you know I have already written a study guide for this exciting story about the Norse invasion of England in the late 800’s A.D. During that time, the country was divided into several smaller kingdoms and there simply wasn’t enough unity in England to resist the wild men of the north who had sailed over the sea to pillage and plunder. By God’s providential hand, however, a new leader rose up to lead his people, King Alfred. The only English monarch ever to be give the moniker “the Great.”

What made Alfred so great? Was it is his faith in God? Was it his military strategy? Was it his love for reading Latin and studying history? It was all of those things and more! Alfred would go on to unify the country and enact just laws to govern the whole land. He started schools and raised literacy in his country. He established, reinforced, and promoted the Christian faith (which was still relatively young in that part of the world). He pulled back his people from the brink of destruction under the hand of dark pagan forces and helped them become a vibrant and prosperous people. Even many of the viking interlopers began to see the light of Christ and became Christians under his influence.

The story follows a young man who comes to be in King Alfred’s service after his father is killed by the invaders. This sharp young man becomes a central leader in Alfred’s forces and helps to repel the Norse invasion by applying ancient battle strategies which he learns about from reading old books. The story is full of great battles on land and sea, great examples of Christian faith and virtue, a little bit of romance, and a lot of adventure!

The new edition will be in hardback and it will contain brand new illustrations, newly made maps, and study guide questions for family discussion at the end of each chapter.
