I’m so looking forward to getting to know Lord Peter Wimsey better now!

LPW is my favorite sleuth. I grew up loving Holmes but always feeling like there was just something so inherently unlikable about him. Ironically, Doyle hated Holmes. Then I discovered Poirot and eventually stumbled upon David Suchet’s portrayal of him, and Poirot became my favorite. But again, we learn so little about Poirot as a person. He’s adorably idiosyncratic, but not relatable. Finally I discovered LPW and the rest is history. Sayers was so fond of him and derived joy from getting to know him as she wrote his stories. He really does almost become an acquaintance or cousin-type figure to the reader. He’s dynamic in every way. Sayers is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated authors of the 20th century, although she does have a cult-following. The fact that she was friends with and even wrote stories with Chesterton, and that CS Lewis said she tremendously influenced his faith, says a lot about her as a person.
