The Didache
STGB's Latest Print Book and Study Guide
Hello Friends of STGB,
We are excited to announce that the Study The Great Books Annotation Edition of The Didache, along with its accompanying Study Guide, are now available for order in our new beautiful print editions.
The Didache is one of the earliest Christian writings outside of the New Testament and has long been considered an excellent example early and orthodox Chrsitian thought. The word didache (Greek: διδαχή) simply means “teaching” and this text is also sometimes called “The Teaching of the Apostles.” Though the text itself was not written by any of the apostles, it is a summary of the “apostolic” Christian faith and was probably composed as a kind of guide to new believers about the core tenets of Christian faith and practice. It’s a short read, but its packed densely with references to the Scripture and its rich teaching.

“Double, double, toil and trouble; fire burn, and cauldron bubble!” So recite the Weird Sisters, the prophetesses of doom. In the tale of Macbeth, by Shakespeare, one enters into a story of inversions where “fair is foul and fouls is fair” and where many lives and kingdoms are being turned upside down. Macbeth, a thane of good King Duncan of Scotland, is a beloved hero of the kingdom and he is to be honored by his king for his bravery and loyal service. It is clear that his future is bright, but what if there is a faster path to glory than the one he currently trods? Will he be content to ascend gradually to that which he has been promised or will he listen to his wife, Lady Macbeth, and charge the hill of ambition? Come and see.

There is a reason A Christmas Carol has become part and parcel with Christmas. There is a reason that it has been performed countless times in countless theaters over the years. There is a reason it has been redone as a movie, over and over again. There is a reason it has been spoofed so many times! The story simply resonates in the hearts of those who know it. It convicts us, it rebukes us, it creates empathy in our hearts, it warms us, it inspires us, and it sends us out to love our neighbor as ourself.

Dracula is not an action slasher story, it’s true, but it is something far better than that. Dracula offers readers the psychological horror of having to come to grips with, and face, something other than the dangers you can normally meet in the regular world. Dracula is evil incarnate. He is evil fluttering like a bat outside your window. He is evil that cannot be killed with a gun or a knife…it’s just not that simple. He is an evil that is ancient, brilliant, sinister in the extreme, and seemingly always ahead of your plans to stop him. Dracula is supernaturally strong and has supernatural powers by which he controls beasts, hearts, and minds. Who can stop him? Who can save you and the ones you love from his irrepressible grasp once he has set his sight upon you or someone you love? Dracula is terrifying.

Everyone knows about the hunt for the white whale in Moby Dick, but one of the best ways to encounter Herman Melville for the first time is in this powerful little tale. Billy Budd never looked to be in the King’s Navy, but when he was forced into service he was quick to make the very best of it because, well, that’s just Billy! Billy is kind, he is hard working, he is handsome, and everyone loves him! Well … almost everyone. When you set sail with Billy on the Bellipotent you will leave the world behind just to find yourself in a new smaller and self contained world. In the world at large it is a time of revolution and upheaval, but all of that is in the background of what is happening on one British “Man-of-War.” It is the well being of all the men of his crew, his world, that Captain Vere has to worry about and there is a serpent on board.

I might have to add this one to my list to purchase down the road! I'm afraid I only learned of the Didache's existence a few years ago, but it was a fascinating read, and very helpful to essentially see some of the condensed teachings of the early Church. I wish more churches in general taught about some of the writings of the early Church!
Do the Annotation Editions provide annotations on the texts, or simply provide space in the margins for you to add your own?
